Built up. A small, subtle, and fragile work. Light and shadow find each other on the wall. Paperclips, pieces of wood, flour, and more come together to form a landscape. When you shift your gaze from the glass plate with its scattered bits and pieces to the wall, you experience a small enchantment. Van Haaften shows how the work is made. It is as if she is saying, “nothing is what it seems.”
She created a temporary image that disappears when the lights go out and the ingredients are packed away. But there is comfort: with meticulous instructions, Van Haaften describes how the image can be rebuilt. Slightly different, but with the same magic.
Roos van Haaften (Amsterdam, 1983) works in Amsterdam.
