Ro Smit

Ro Smit creates three-dimensional works using a variety of materials. Textiles, ceramics and, in this piece, rubber are key materials. Smit’s work is introspective and deeply personal. It is made with care and, certainly, with love. Although Smit looks inwards through her work, there is also a profound engagement with the outside world and the viewer. The hanging lungs are largely made from bicycle tyres. Two pairs of lungs are connected by a long strand of bicycle tyres. This is clearly visible in the valves, which are prominently present. Ro Smit has shaped the sculpture by ingeniously stitching the material together with red thread. It is a sculpture that vacillates between attraction and repulsion. Ultimately, the positive prevails.
