Marloes Roeper forces us to focus entirely on the present. Images and landscapes that we have all seen before and know so well. She strips them down to an essence that takes us by surprise. Because it is so convincingly simple. It is unerringly accurate, and its simplicity is almost startling. Every brushstroke is necessary, and there is not a single brushstroke too many, no hesitation in the making. Marloes' searching and exploring is not in the painting but in her cutouts, in what she does and does not show us.
Marloes told me that she sees painting a canvas as a sports competition. The preparations are essential; you have to be completely ready. And then it's all or nothing. And you can see that.
Marloes Roeper (Texel, 1998) works in Groningen.
