Hannah Meijer

What materials do you work with?
Choosing the right material is actually the most important aspect of my work. The material tells the story I want to convey. What clearly emerges in what I make is the duality between the different materials I use. Sometimes in the material itself, hard versus soft. But also in the choice, intuitive versus analytical.
For example, textiles and yarn versus square tiles and plexiglass. Usually, the materials that I see as analytical and practical prevail over the intuitive and sensitive part. The use of the materials is symbolic.
There is often an underlying theme in my work. Confinement, repression, restriction; not giving something the space it seems to need. This mainly concerns intuition and sensitivity. I deal with these themes a lot in my daily life. Not only in my personal life, but also in society. Intuition and sensitivity are important topics. You cannot approach and solve everything pragmatically.
